While creating Teachings, I was thinking about the lessons I learned from my father’s passing and my life without him—how loss has provided me with the opportunity to help others, and how, through my own grief, I learn and try to be better. I think about the teachings I receive daily, and how my own life lessons may actually help someone else. While being introduced to speak to students at a high school, the teacher said, “Pay close attention to Mr. Barber and his teachings.” That was the first time I felt that what I was saying had value and that others could learn from me—I wasn’t just telling a story. I had teachings. I hadn’t really thought of it like that before.
Thick layers of paint, varnish and shellac add texture to this piece.
