Last year, I was fortunate to collaborate with students at École secondaire Gabriel-Dumont in London, on a project that became something much bigger than we first imagined. The artwork was turned into shirts, with all proceeds going to Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford. In December, we proudly donated $3,188 to support the Centre’s ongoing work in preserving and revitalizing Indigenous languages, art, and history. My heartfelt thanks to the students who took part, everyone who purchased a shirt, and Madame Alexe for the opportunity to create something meaningful together.

September 10, 2022 Today was the opening reception of the Indigenous Art exhibition at the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ontario. My painting, Identity, was purchased by the Woodland Cultural Centre and is now part of their permanent collection. It’s difficult to put into words what an honour it is to be included in this exhibition and collection. My grandmother was a residential school survivor of the Mohawk Institute, located beside the Woodland Cultural Centre. It’s hard to believe that I now have a painting about my search for identity on the very grounds where hers was taken. The gentleman with me in this photo is Geronimo Henry. He is also a survivor of the Mohawk Institute. I met Geronimo about ten years ago while researching my installation for the Mush Hole Project. He shared his personal stories and experiences with me about his years at the school. They are difficult to hear, but they have played an important role in helping me piece together my own life. I’m deeply grateful for his knowledge and friendship. He is an amazing person.

Putting the finishing touches on Taker. Installed in front of the Mohawk Institute in Brantford, Ontario—Canada’s oldest residential school—this sculpture was created as part of the Mush Hole Project. My grandmother, Gramma B, attended the residential school there. Taker is rooted in her story and the lasting impact of what was taken from her and so many others.
