48” x 48” Mixed media painting on cradled ply panel.
A powerful exploration of intergenerational trauma and healing, expressed through layered mixed media.
Hand Me Down confronts Michael’s father’s suicide as well as his grandfather’s. It does so openly and with uncompromising force. For many years now, rates of suicide among Indigenous men in Canada have remained disproportionately higher than those of non-Indigenous men. Little has changed. The painting addresses generations of trauma and disconnection from culture created by the Canadian government and church organizations through their residential schools. It is about passing down these sufferings across familial lines and what it means to bear them. - Matthew Ryan Smith
Thick layers of paint, varnish and shellac add texture to this piece.
